Two Extremely Common Misconceptions of Satan

If this is your first time visiting this site, please click here.

Satan, since he rebelled and fell from heaven, has been wandering around the earth deceiving whom he is able to.  Satan told the first lie ever told in Genesis 3.

Genesis 3:1-6- [1] Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the  LORD Go had made.  And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? [2] And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: [3] But of the fruit of the tree which is in the mist of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. [4] And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: [5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. [6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, an it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took the fruit thereof, and did it, and gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

“Ye shall not surely die” was the first lie ever told. The manipulative tempting that Satan gave to Eve in the garden was just enough to sow a seed of doubt in her which made her give into the lust of her eyes and eat the forbidden fruit.  The lie he told was so bold, and went into such detail in tempting them by mixing the truth with such a bold and detailed lie.  It was so manipulative, that you can guarantee physicians today would label someone who pulled something like this a sociopath.  Every bit of misery to ever exist in the world, is the result of on five word lie “ye shall not surely die.”  Lying has NEVER been a victimless crime.

Satan has been deceiving people ever since, and today, has almost all professing Christians deceived with two common and dangerous misconceptions of him.

Misconception 1- Satan is the ruler of hell tormenting the damned with his demons.

This has often been depicted by Hollywood and even some Christian film productions.  We even see this as far back as the ancient Roman comedian Dante with “the 9 circles of hell.”  This is not biblical and is the work of popular fiction.  Satan is not the ruler of hell and as a matter of fact, hasn’t even been there yet.  The Bible teaches that Satan is wandering about the earth right now deceiving people as said earlier in this article.

Job 1: 7- And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou?  Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and walking up and down it.

I have no idea where this false teaching first started, I have seen Christians quote Matthew 10:28 to support this doctrine, but I highly doubt that is where it started.  I will quote the verse anyway an explain it to you.

Matthew 10:28- And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

People will quote that verse, and say that it is talking about Satan, but there is a problem with this interpretation.  Hell is a place where the lost will suffer the wrath of God for eternity, and was actually created for the Satan and his fallen angels to be destroyed in.

Matthew 25:41- Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Revelation 20:10- And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Eternal fire was prepared for Satan and his fallen angels, where they will be cast into right before the great white throne judgment (which is what I quoted from Matthew 25) to suffer the wrath of God for eternity.  Therefore Satan can not be the one tormenting people in hell.  The wrath of God is what torments people in hell.

To avoid confusion on this subject, I feel it is necessary to explain the difference between hell and the lake of fire.  Both places are places of eternal torment in flames.  However, hell is where the eternally damned are at now, and where the unsaved will go at this current age of the biblical timeline when they die.  The lake of fire is where people already in hell and unsaved people that were alive up until the vials of God’s wrath falls upon the earth.

Revelation 20: 14-15- [14] And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.  This is the second death. [15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

These are events that will happen during end times, and that is a huge subject that will go way off topic from this article.  I recommend this if you want to go into a more in depth study of end times.

Misconception 2- The appearance of Satan

This refutation will be much shorter than the first one, but many people think of Satan as an evil, red guy with horns like a bull carrying a pitchfork with triangle blades.  This is also the work of popular fiction.  However, not everyone thinks he looks like this.  There are some people who think that they will know for sure if the see Satan thinking he would be in an evil appearance.

However, we know that Satan’s goal is to deceive the world, so why would he come in his evil appearance?  People would know and say “you’re the devil, I am not listening to you.”  There is an easy answer for that.  Satan will not come to you in an evil appearance.  Consider the following.

2 Corinthians 11:14- And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Satan will substitute good for evil, and evil for good.  That is what makes this misconception so dangerous, because if you think Satan will come to you in his evil appearance, then how will you recognize him when he comes to you as an angel of light? This is exactly what he did to Eve in the garden of Eden.  He went to her as one who wanted to help her gain knowledge.

People, Satan is the father of lies and the most manipulative liar that will have ever existed.  Be not deceived by his boldness.  In the name of The Lord Jesus Christ I write unto you.  Amen.
